HELP! I have never owned a Gator but am looking at a used 2004 CX. A guy on another site cautioned against getting a "turf" Gator because of transmission repair cost (if ever needed). What is a "turf" Gator? Is the CX a "turf" Gator? If I had to replace the engine, is it a standard engine that may have been used on other machines? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a 2006 CX. They come with either turf tires or atv knobby tires. I have the latter. I haven't had any problems with it except for the diaphram fuel pump which is a crappy non-deere/kawasaki part found on a lot of small engines these days but cheap to replace. The engine is a Kawasaki industrial 10 hp which is an excellent engine and will probably never die if taken care of. The transmission is actually a transaxle driven by a CVT clutch. I think the only reason the trans would fail would be abuse like leaving the idle too high which will cause you to grind gears when you engage fw or reverse. I guess on a used model I would start it and check to see that it goes into gear smoothly without grinding and the trans is not noisy under load.

Frankly, anything Deere is expensive to replace regardless of the product. But most people like Deere because most products are well though out and constructed. The CX is not intended to be an 40 hour a week commercial type vehicle like the larger Gators but it far exceeded my expectations for personal use- I use it to plow snow (bought the plow kit), move trailers, haul stuff, and for recreation in the woods and it goes all day on a tank of gas. Even though it's 2 wheel drive, with the knobby tires and differential lock I haven't had problems in sand, mud, or snow which surprised me.

BTW- When people refer to a "Turf Gator" that's not the CX but a different model.

Thanks for you prompt reply. I went and looked at the CX Gator today. It ran fine. It looked so good that I went ahead and bought it. It's not as big and nice as my brother's TS, but I think it will be fine for my needs. It is a 2004 year model with only 118 hours. I do wish it had a little more leg room.
Thanks again. I will probably be returning to this site for additional information.

118 hours is low- I have more than that on my 2006. Have fun.
