6x4 brakes
have recently acquired a 2000 gator 6x4 that has brakes that squeak loud enough to hear a mile away. i have changed the tranny fluid and used the john deere brand fluid and i have added the friction modifier suggested on here. i have also tried braking hard to see if i could "scrub off" the pad any......and nothing has helped. the machine has over 3800 hours on it (according to the meter)...have no way of verifying that. the brakes stop me fine....only problem is noise. is there anything else i can do about the sound short of spending $500 or more on them? will it hurt anything other than my eardrums if i let them squeal?

try removing the caliper and rough up the pads just a little with a rough sand paper, same goes for the disc themselves, also rough them up with some sandpaper. on re-assembly check the caliper slides that they are free and lubed, a reason for the squeak could be the caliper hanging up and causeing premature pad wear and thats where your squeaks coming from, another reason could be the pads are glazed over from running at faster speeds on the machine and stopping quickly, try the sand paper trick and let me know how ya make out

Burninrubber obviously thinks a Gator has conventional hydraulic brakes like a car...... not the case.
Having done all the things suggested by the many knowledgable forum members with no success and bearing in mind the fairly high mileage of your Gator it sounds like you possibly need new brakes. See the parts list at deere.com for part numbers. Also, search the forum for TM1518 - this is the tech manual and somewhere in here there is a link to download a copy of it. Since replacing the brakes involves removal and dismantling of the transaxle, the tech manual will be essential reading! The manual has an extensive diagnostics section for the brakes and covers the issue of noise.

Good question - there have been many description of brake noise: I've seen it described as a groan, a howl, and in your case a squeak. The tech manual talks about 'brakes noisy or chattering'. My experience is limited to my own early model 6X4 with 2100 hours on it. Its brakes 'groan' under heavy downhill braking, but they actually work very well. The noise is better than when I first acquired and rebuilt the machine a few months ago. I've bought some new hydraulic fluid for the transaxle but haven't yet gotten around to replacing it. You say that your squeaking brakes can be heard a mile away - that's LOUD and can't be good!! If it was my Gator, I'd certainly take the time to sort it. Start by getting hold of the tech. manual (TM1518) as it has quite an extensive diagnostics section dealing with brake noise (replacement being the last resort), plus it's an essential reference for everything Gator.

after adding more friction modifier (according to bottle correct amount was 2 oz and i have added one extra ounce), the noise is better, but far from gone. still wonder if the noise has any adverse affects long term on anything other than the ears.

Hello there... I am having the same issue with my M1 gator. That link for the manual is dead. Any other place where I can download the manual TM1518?

Just tried it.... clicked the link which took me to the Rapidshare site, clicked the Free Download button and away it went. Took just over 5 minutes to download.
I'm using Firefox and Win 7.
