|  Carbon buildup on Spark Plug causes stalling 
 
 After cleaning the spark plug the gator runs fine for several days, but if the engine idles for any length of time the plug gets a coating of carbon and causes the engine to miss, cough, and eventually die.  The engine will usually not start again until the plug is cleaned.  I removed the spark arrestor on the tail pipe which was causing a back pressure, and this same problem, but that was about 4 years ago.  It had been running well until this year.  I have tried a hotter plug, inspecting the air filter, and removed cleaned the muffler.

 The spark plug never clears itself. It doesn't always die, not until the plug no longer can fire to ignite the charge.

 Sorry the only thing I gan think of might be ring blow by but if it is not burning oil I don't know.

 The engine is not burning any oil.  Do you know what the cylinder compression stroke pressure should be on the Kawasaki single cylinder engine.  My gauge reads about 35 psi which seems extremely low.  In some Kawasaki lit it said the engine had a compression release system, but it was referring to a rope pull start.  Of course the gator has a 12 volt starter motor, so doesn't seem like the engine would need a compression release to start, but who knows?

 35 PSI is low. There is a spring loaded compression release on the inside of the camshaft. There is a tab that hits the lifter at slow rotation until rpms get up and overcome the spring pressure. If the spring was broken I don't think the release would work at all and I have never seen one bound up to hold it on all the time, but I guess It's possible. Could be a valve train problem. Valves are set at .005 cold

 I really appreciate your input about the compression release system.  If the compression release is slow to close, such as at idle speed, it would explain the poor combustion in the cylinder. It would also explain why there is no loss of power at higher rpm's.
