 John Deere Gator Muffler Weld

Hi everyone. I have an old 1996 4x2 Gator and today noticed that where the pipe joins up to the canister, the weld is broken off. This one is joined near the top of the canister. Can this just be welded back together? Ugh...

Do I need this even on there? Sure don't want to buy a new one. Thanks!

Usually there's too much deterioration for a weld to have enough solid structure to attach to. You might try making a reinforcement piece out of stainless or aluminum sheet and adhering/sealing it with gasket sealant, clamps, pop rivets, whatever.

Thank you. Can you tell me if I need the canister part at all though?

Just as clarification here, the OP stated "the weld is broken off".

Is it just broken from vibration, impact, etc., or did it rust off.

With a location of Arizona I'm wondering about how much deterioration there might be.

If it's just a cracked weld, no problem to weld it back together.

Best of luck.

Murf, is is just a broken weld. Vibration I'm sure. Been taking it on some washboard roads, etc lately. Would JB weld work? I don't know how to post a picture on here. It's clean the break.

JB "Weld" is good epoxy but just epoxy.

Not sure what a cannister is, but all your exhaust system does is keep the blast off your face and ears, so if it runs OK without it, ....

If a steel weld didn't hold, JB weld certainly won't.

Anyone with just a little skill and a small MIG or stick welder can do it easy enough.

But no matter how you fix it, you need to add some sort of extra bracing in there. Is it possible that a factory exhaust bracket is missing? Exhaust vibration / motion is usually more than adequately provided for when those things are built.

Best of luck.

Thanks everyone. I will have someone weld it. The "canister" I refer to is the bigger part. I took it out yesterday and it is pretty loud. As long as it doesn't hurt the performance of it running I can live with it until I find someone to weld it and brace it. Love the forum, thanks. Linda
