, i have a similar thing with one of mine but i think the hour meter still works. Have a google for a wiring diagram i found one and i suspct i have a problem with either a swicth on the transmission or a swicth on the handbrake which stops you starting unless in neautral and handbark on. To be honest i hadn't noticied if the hour meter was working or not. See if you can find a iring diagram and then look at what i am talking about and if it makes sense or not.
