2005 JD Gator HPX son t start Need some help
New member here. Have a JD gator that worked perfectly until the cold weather, battery was weak and gator sat until spring. Tried starting this spring and battery was dead. New battery. Thing cranks but does not fire. Can here fuel pump. Changed spark plugs, put spark plug tester on and have orange spark not blue and the spark is intermittent sometimes when you crank there is no spark other times there is orange spark.
Finally fed up and took to dealership. Dealership says the engine is not good, needs a new engine???? After questioning the mechanic he said you did a leak down test on the engine and had air coming out of the dipstick. Mechanic said there was a loose ground wire on the block that he cleaned and tightened and had good spark.
He said you can't do a compression test on the Kaw engine.
I don't really think the engine is bad. I would think that there would have been signs of this prior to it not starting. Smoking perhaps. I am not a mechanic. Just doesn't make sense. Any ideas>>>>I want to try the Igniter module but am worried that I will throw $340 away if this is not it.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Pat

I can't think of any good reason why a compression test could not be run on a Kawi engine. If the machine was running when you put it away, I would look to the carb if you are now getting a good spark. You could almost do a compression test with your finger. Take both spark plugs out. Watch out for the spark leads and keep the throttle open. You'll feel it pushing out on the compression stroke.
If the old spark plugs were not all oily, your engine is probably OK. Even new engines will let some air past the rings on a leakdown test. Unless it has been blowing oil out the crank breather and fouling spark plugs, I'd try and get it running first. Let us know what you find.

Well, I ordered an ignition module (John Deere Module AM132577) found it at Gator Parts Store for $284.07(Cheapest I could find on the internet). I received it today and put it on the gator. The module is bolted on with 2 #10mm bolts, unplugged the old one and plugged the new one in and presto I HAVE A RUNNING GATOR!!!!! As soon as I turned the key the gator fired right up, just as it did last fall when I put it away for the winter.
I still cannot believe that this was the issue. Dealership said I had to replace the engine! If it hadn't been for the multiple post of the same issue I probably would have replaced the engine. Thank God for the internet and the handy/shade tree guys/gals on these sites! It is a pricey piece but way cheaper than a new issue. Hope this helps someone!
