New String Trimmer Needed
I know everyone has their favorite brands, and I have had an old Weedeater for 10 years, and it wasn't that great 10 years ago. Thinking of a Stihl, but the guy at Home Depot made a strong point for Echo...thoughts, suggestions? My current one is heavy, straight shaft, I need something where I don't have to bend over a lot (I'm tall),but something my wife can handle as well...am I asking too much?

My first choice would be a Stihl FS 110RX, second choice FS85RX. I have several Stihl products and have had EXCELLENT experiences with them all. VERY reliable, effect, and user friendly.

New String Trimmer Needed
Chief, I knew you would prefer Stihl, and I think they make great products (I have a Farm Boss chain saw that never lets me down). But I seem to like this "Rapid Load" head on the Echo...does anyone have any experience with this?

New String Trimmer Needed
I am not sure about that particular model Echo but over on Lawn Cafe & Lawn Forum (a website for commercial turf folks) they seem to be pretty unhappy with Echo trimmers and blowers lately. Stihl and John Deere seems to enjoy a good reputation with these guys. I have never used Echo products so maybe some of the other guys on the board here that have will jump in.

New String Trimmer Needed
I've got an Echo string trimmer that's a few years old. It has chronic problems with minor fuel leakage, and has been hard to start a few times, but other than those problems it has worked ok. If I was buying another one today I probably would look at other brands first.

New String Trimmer Needed
Bought a stihl fs-85 last year when my weedwacker died,shopped around and looked at all of them:echo,stihl,husq,robin,domar,sears,ryobi and a few of the bargin lables. Settled on the big 3 echco,husq and the stihl,all of them were within a few dollars of each other.
But like the tractor board discusions the dealer was the final decision maker,my local stihl dealer is the best, he even remembered my purchase of my 046 mag 3 yrs earlier and gave me 15% off the sticker for a returning customer.
Husq may be the ONLY one even close to the varity of attachments you can get for these things, this kind of equipement can no longer be refered to as "weedwackers"

New String Trimmer Needed
I have owned many string trimmers (used to mow grass as a kid). They range from homelite, weed eater, poulan and now I own an Echo. The Echo is by far superior over the other ones I have had. It is very lightweight (I can hold it with one arm and trim grass) and balanced very well. I have had it for a few years and haven't really did anything to it. I don't even drain the mix out of it at the end of the year and two pulls and it fires right up.

New String Trimmer Needed
When I look at buying something like this, I generally look at what people that rely on them to make their living use. Around here, the commercial people use Echo, Stihl or Tanaka. I own 3 Echo trimmers and one small chainsaw and have had no problems whatsoever. If you take care of them and perform normal maintenance and keep stabilizer in the gas, I think you will be very happy. I've heard good things about all three, for me it just came down to price and service.

I also prefer Stihl products, but you are going to find Echo has fine products also. I have no idea of the use you will put this trimmer through, but some food for thought: if you trim all day or large areas, then look into a cycle bar unit with weight carrying harness. The off-the-shelf Home Depot types are O.K. for your small yards, but the last thing you want to do is lug one over acres, six to ten times a day (if you are a pro that's what you'll be doing). The larger units like Stihl have enough torque to drive saw blades, and heavy line heads that carry more line and are prone to break line less often. And for pete's sake, forget about the ones that have tillers, blowers, edgers, and such because in my experience, those features work best as separate dedicated units.

New String Trimmer Needed
I use Tanaka products String trimmers, edgers, blowers etc. I own a landscape/property maintenance company. Tanaka has served me well. Cheaper than the other players and just as durable if not more so. Give them a look.
