Seems like I've kept several hospitals, lots of Doctors and Nurses busy since the first of January this year. First a Prostate operation, then a fall on the ice resulting in a broken pelvis. All that has healed fine and is 100%. What caused me to fall on the ice in the first place is a bad right ankle that has been a problem with swelling and pain for a year or so now. Several local doctors have tried their best to diagnose it, no luck, it still is swelled and hurts bad. I got accepted at Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota and started my tests on April 5th and 6th then back again today. Next week the 11th 12th and 13th, with my results on Monday the 16th. I simply cannot believe this place, the size, the instant schedueling, the thouroughness of the tests. If they can't find it I don't think anyone else can, So our hopes rest with them. I'll have my laptop along to keep up with TP. Frank.

Hardwood:
Hope all goes well for you. I know you are into woodworking. I found out yesterday that allot of the wood stored in my barn in 1 1/2"-2" x 10-12" x 12,16-20' is Elm.
Is the elm good for anything other than firewood and planking for ramps and maybe barn floors?
None of it is clear and many of the pieces have cracks part way through them.

Yoper: First,kind of an update from Mayo. I did the scheduled tests yesterday and again today, with the rest to be completed in five more days during the next two weeks. We surely appreciate everyones concern and prayers, I've got all the faith in the world that they will find the problem. Yoper, I really can't answer your question about elm, I've never used any for furniture wood, mostly allways red or white oak, maple, walnut, or cherry. Several years ago I took a couple red elm logs on trade for something, I had them sawn and stickered to dry. This lumber has sat in the corner of the shop for years, I noticed some cracking of the lumber too, so maybe air drying isn't the best for elm. I posted the question about elm on one of the woodworking sites a month or so ago, some guys posted pictures of tables, etc. made from red elm, it looks almost like red oak. One of my first projects this summer is to make somethung out of the elm just to see how it works. Frank.

Good to hear that things are going to schedule for you. Sometimes it is hard to figure out the problems. I'm sure the ankle is giving you problems but sometimes the remedy is worse than the ailment.
I often suffer from gout when I indulge in too much caffein from Pepsi and especially Dr. Pepper. I also have a passion for tripe (pickle cow stomach-old German delicacy) and excessive vinegar does me in. Too many adult beverages also kick it up. Another problem is arthritis. It usually triggers the worst between winter and spring months when it is damp out. Arizona is a possible cure for that. I also had a spur once that gave me lots of pain for months until one day it disappeared, all on its own. The human body sure is a mistery!
Getting back to the elm. I once took one of the thinner 5/4 pieces and used it for a step on the front porch and found it to warp real bad from weather (heat and rain). Most of it has very little grain and is very light in color except when you get close to the tree's core, where it darkens dramatically. Reminds me of the varied colors in Hickory.
I think it has some good strength properties and is considerably lighter in weight than oak and ash. I've got about 3 dozen or more boards that aren't in the greatest shape and think turning them into firewood is a waste.

Yoper; One of the first tests they did was for Gout. They draw some fluid out of the ankle join, put it on a microscope plate and check for microscopic crystals in the fluid. Crystals=Gout, no crystals=no gout. No crystals were found. Frank.
