F-250 SD 7 3L Diesel Engine help
Heck, you can use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope. Put the blade end on the suspect area and hold your ear next to the handle. A hard plastic handle works best. Sometimes you can even feel the noise through the screwdriver with your fingers.

Well, I checked the power steering pump and it was low. So that's topped off. It didn't take much at all. That wasn't it.
I replaced the tensioner since that was the next logical item and much less than a compressor or steering pump. It did nothing. BUT, after driving in this morning so it had some miles on it, the noise was significantly less. I don't mind the new tensioner as I could tell the difference between the new and old when installing the belt.
I know it's not the belt since it got a new belt when the truck got a new water pump. I'm going to run it a few more days and see if the noise stays improved. I should be able to tell when I leave work.
Replacing the tensioner wasn't bad except you can't see the bolt and I couldn't get it out once I had it off. So I held it with my left hand while I removed another pully with my right hand to clear out space. Then it was ok.

Also, I did use a piece of clear tubing to try to find the sound after I replaced the tensioner. I was unable to locate the source. But it may be coming from down low where I wasn't willing to place the tubing due to high speed rotating objects being in the way.
When the water pump blew, coolant got everywhere. The first replacement pump also leaked. So significant coolant may have gotten onto some pulleys and just hasn't been cleaned off yet. The new tensioner may help with overriding that slippery stuff. Just a theory.

Peters, I may go there next. Lots of items in that area took a bath when the water pump blew. I'll see how the truck runs tonight after work.

Well guys, after a full day on the new tensioner, the noise is better, but not completely resolved. Sigh... onto the next possible source. We'll see how far along I get.

If the tensioner improved the situation much I would have to say that the glycol rinse is likely the culprit.
Something is still slipping, but not by much.
Best of luck.

Did you replace more than one tensioner? Peters may also be correct about the fan clutch. Mine went out on my old '89 F-250 with a slight noise.

Grab hold of the fan blade (while the engines is OFF) and see if there is any movement front to back. There should only be the flex of the fan and nothing else. If the is even the slightest I would replace it. Other wise you could be buying a new rad too.

Sorry I was travelling and needed to be brief. I have heard clutch fan squeal also, usually the sound is different than a belt or pulley, but with the sound changing and it having been bounced around with the water pump replacement? It was the first thing that leaped to my mind, but I thought you were on the right course with the tensioners.
