F-250 SD 7 3L Diesel Engine help
I haven't had time to look at it sice I put the tensioner on the truck. The sound is like a rattle rather than the typical belt squeel. That's why I was worried about more expensive parts going. I'll check the fan next since that got shifted when the waterpump blew.
The water pump blew the bearing pieces out so the shaft that held the fan was just hanging there. The fan didn't get into the radiator (thankfully), but I think it got a glycol bath. Thanks for telling me how to check it, peters.

It is sounding more and more like a clutch fan. Now if we can just get Dennis to add the ability to include audio clips!!!
Oneace provided the description before I had a chance. As usual it is a team effort here.

Yes there is no "I" in team. Fan clutches are generally not that expensive. But depending on what type you have you may or may not need a special tool to remove it. I never looked that closely at the PSD fan so not for sure which one you would have. Most Fords you do need it but since the engine is made by International I have no clue.?

F-250 SD 7 3L Diesel Engine help
I grabbed the clutch fan last night and didn't feel any fore/back motion. However, it's fairly stiff to rotate. Any idea on how the fan clutch is supposed to feel when rotating it? Smooth? Free? Stiff? Is it supposed to free-wheel if you give it a spin?

They should move when they are cold freely and smoothly, but with some resistance from the oil in the clutch. If you give it a had spin it should turn nearly one revolution.

Well, it's no free wheeling Peters. Give it whirl and it stops when you stop. I think I may check one out at the auto parts store and get a feel for how it should spin. If I detect a difference, then I'll replace it.

Every clutch feels a little different. You are right go to the parts house and see how tight a new one is. If the fas is not releasing like is should you fuel mileage will suffer by about 10 to 15 percent.

F-250 SD 7 3L Diesel Engine help
The fan clutch will not spin freely but will move when you turn in by hand when cold, when warm it will turn a little easier. Did you give the front of the motor a good bath to get rid of all the coolant that came from the water pump. Its good that you replaced the tensioner assembly, they do loosen up over time, not just the bearing. You say the sound got a little better when you replaced the tensioner? Try spraying a little water on the belt, if the noise goes away for a second, replace the belt and check all pullies to make sure they are clean, I know you already replaced the belt, but they don't like getting wet with coolant. Put a long screw driver to your ear to check for bearing noise, this is the easiest way to find your noise, compare all the pullies, you will know when you have found a bad one.
