Honda Gx270 Will not start Stumped

Ok, I have a Generac Pressure Washer Model Pro 30D - powered by a 9HP Honda GX270. I started it and used it for about 30 mins - ran great. I ran out of gas and it shut off. I refilled with gas and this damn this will not start. Here is what I tried. Trying to get my pressure washer working - driving me nuts - would appreciate any helpful suggestions advice. No smart ass answers please!
Here is what I have done -
This had been sitting in the garage for a while without any gas in it. Bone dry!
The other day I put gas in it and checked oil and it started just fine. I pressure washed the back patio and the rear of the house ran good for about 35 mins until I ran out of gas.
Here’s what happened next:
1. Added gas to tank
2. Tried to restart pressure washer – ran briefly ~15 secs then shut off
3. Checked oil figured oil may be low. So filled oil to full level.
4. Tried to start it – same result – started ~15 secs then shut off.
5. Checked Air filter for clog – it was clean – when I took the air filter off the foam outer part was so dry it fell apart in my hand. But the rest of the filter was clean – cleaned with an air hose and re-attached it.
6. Disconnected the Fuel Lines and blew them out with compressor noticed no blockage.
7. Drained gas tank and blew it out with compressor – reattached and added fresh gas
8. Removed spark plug and checked it. It was the original plug ~12 years old – so I replaced it with a brand new identical plug – NGK - getting good spark.
9. Attempted to start - started ~15 secs then shut off
10. Removed Air Filter, fuel line, and carburetor and sprayed the hell out of it with carb cleaner, then blew it all out with compressor carefully making sure I have all the parts etc.
11. Removed Carb Bowls, Float and pin, cleaned them with carb cleaner and replaced old O-rings on carb bowls and re-assembled. Checked for gas leaks – none all good
12. Attempted to restart – No Joy ! Won’t even start no matter what I try. Removed and checked Spark Plug – clean as a whistle. Checked carb bowls they are getting gas.
13. Adjusted valves to specs, had it running but it was running really rough and rich.
14. Order brand new carb and replaced it. No Start!!
15. Double checked valves with feeler gauges - correct.
16. I noticed when I pull the pull start cord about 3/4 of the way out it gets really hard to pull.
Totally stumped!! Would appreciate any help.

Based on what you've done so far I'd say you've narrowed the culprit down to either the fuel system (other than the carb or lines) or the ignition (other than the plug).

To me that leaves two likely causes, the governor or a safety switch.

The governor is where I'd start. Tie it wide open or put a spring on it to bias it to more throttle and try it.

For the spark issue, I don't know what other than oil sensor there might be, but by-pass it (or them) and try it again.

Let us know how you make out.

Best of luck.

As Murf said the Honda engines have an oil sensor for low oil level. I think the oil level might be the culprit.

On my Honda engine based pressure washer I filled it to what I thought was the fill line, but actually was too high. I got the same symptom you describe very hard to pull starter cord indicating oil level too high.

I would pull the spark plug and clean it in gas if oil fouled, drain some of the oil out until you can pull the cord and it spins properly, then put the plug back in and let it sit for an hour or so and try to start it again.

You covered your entire engine for problems, I'm thinking the water pump may have a bearing or impellor issue. Motor runs for 15 secs and then is forced to stop by a binding pump. Another could be a ground short somewhere in the ignition switch. Have seen an auto coil that would last for 10-minutes and then cut out only to restart after a long wait. Do Honda's have a proper coil or a B&S style flywheel magnet system?

. I've completely drained the oil and the pull start symptom has not changed a friend advised pulling the head apart and looking at the cylinder walls and piston

going to try disconnecting pump completely to rule pump issue out

While the logic is sound, that concept doesn't seem very likely.

If the pump was bound up enough to stall out an 8.5hp engine you certainly wouldn't have any luck pull-starting it.

I also doubt it would a) suddenly manifest itself when the engine ran out of gas, or, b) be intermittent enough that you could pull-start it and get 15 seconds of run time before it bound up again.

I have had sensors go bad like that though.

Best of luck.

Tom,

You have really hit so many areas on this...

If the engine ran 15 seconds several times before you did the valve adjustment, I sincerely doubt that the valves needed adjusting. I assume you found no broken springs or loose nuts when you pulled the valve cover. The adjustment you made is most likely the source of the hard pull because it is significantly off. Trying to run an engine with a bad valve adjustment can cause dire results.

Been down this road before, the problem is just one simple thing like a bad oil sensor or similar simple thing. But we are missing it and attacking every system on the engine.

Now since we have touched 6 different things we now have 6 factorial probabilities of things that could be an issue.

I had a an old Corvair that I rebuilt an engine on to no avail to cure oil blow by, so I feel your pain.

PS when you say fresh gas you mean gas you just bought this week right.
