Why is there no toyota diesel
The max trailer weight rating is 7200# The payload is rated at 1900#
Not sure where that fits into the standards for 1/2 ton or 3/4 to trucks.

Mark, does it show a gross combined weight rating? For trailer pulling, that is often the most important number.
Sounds like the Tundra would be considered to be a heavy duty half ton.

Gross combined 11,800#, guess I was pushing the limits with that load of concrete.

Why is there no toyota diesel
Pushing the limit....I hauled a Komatsu D31 (16K lbs) on my triple axle gooseneck and was right at 29,000 lbs GC. Seemed to do fine on the flats, and wasn't overloaded on any axle, but even with all the axles braking I wouldn't have wanted to make a panic stop. I think mine is rated at 19,500 GCWR and that is about right. If I keep it under 20k it runs cool and strong and stops well. Much over that and everything is maxed out. Not a smart thing to do...

I'd say the Nissan diesel is a couple of years old.

Why is there no toyota diesel

my 7/8 comment was for the tundra. I saw it referred to that way in one of the car mags. I know it's an exaggeration but the tundra interior does feel smaller than C/F/D's. specs show it is shorter (218 vs chevy 228" , narrower, and less tall.
tundra's capacity numbers are there with C/F/D, but I like to stay away from "undersized" machinery even though it carries impressive stats. i drive an Intrepid for work with 2.7L V-6 "rated" at 200hp. those 200 ponies must not have gotten their oats, cause it's a dog.
And I have 4 toyota's in the family now,so i'm not picking a anti-toyota argument.
I just prefer working with a bigger tool. That's why i mentioned hearing of larger versions in the future.

Why is there no toyota diesel
Chicago Tribune, 1/16/03
Detroit Auto Show Notebook
"Toyota will introduce the Tundra Double Cab at the Chicago Auto Show in Feb, a version of its full-size pickup with four conventional doors. The Tundra lineup consists of regular cab and Access Cab models, the latter an extended cab with rear-opening back doors.
"Though the Tundra competes with full-size pickups, it lacks the size and brawn of big trucks from F, GM, and D, as well as the 2004 Nissan Titan. When the Titan was unveiled in Detroit, Nissan referred to Tundra as "seven-eighths of a full-sized p/u", but Toyota says size doesn't matter that much.
"In that market of about 2 million [full size] trucks, there are a lot of different buyer motivations," said Jim Press, chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales. "Tundra is a good personal-size truck. We're not necessarily going after the segment that wants to pull tractors."

Ok. I'll buy 19/20's but not 7/8's.

Why is there no toyota diesel
Back to the original question. Toyota is only now beginning to get its act together in regards to automotive diesels in Europe. They didn't offer diesels in cars in Europe until the last year or so. (Diesel engines power close to 40% of new cars!)
I think that Toyota will hold out a little longer here in the states, especially since the Turdra saw its sales numbers drop for the 2002 model year.
I like your original question. I wish more Americans would go to their dealers and ask for diesels. I am a loyal diesel buyer. (I purchased four over the last eight years.) Americans need to realize the benefits of the MODERN diesel engine. When I would speak of the consistent 50+ mpg from my VW Golf TDI...eyebrows would raise. If Americans would actually test-drive new diesels, VWs especially, they would realize that their old excuses for not driving a diesel have been eliminated. There are virtually no downsides to owning a modern diesel. I'll gladly stand by that last statement and argue it until I'm blue in the keyboard!
