Paypal email scam
Just after I renewed my subscription here I got a email from Paypal showing that the transaction took place. Then I got another email from the what appears to be the same sender asking me to activate my paypal account by clicking on the link and entering my password. Now I'm no fool so I didn't. The Email even had a side bar saying Paypal would never ask for my password in an email! It's just so hard to know where these are coming from, everything looks right. New subscribers should "BEWARE"

Note from Tractorpoint:
Paypal allows you to pay TP for membership by either joining Paypal for using your credit card without joining Paypal. This was probably a valid membership note from Paypal. If you re sketical never click on a link in a suspicious email. Goto the paypal.com site by putting that address in yourself, and visit the site with your id and password.
Since Paypal is the largest credit card processor on the internet and part of eBay, there are scamers who send mail out acting as if they are Paypal. Any of these activities are not related to the Tractorpoint site.

That second email was the phish. If you were to fillout the information, pasword, credit card info ect you wouldbe in dedt today. The site is so real looking that it evenhas the little paypal logo in the addy.
Mastercard and Visa and few Banks have the same phish scams out there. BE CAREFUL, call on the phone and verify DO NOT FILL OUT this questionaires with your personnal information.

I wrote Paypal and sent them the email and they said they did not know the origin of the email asking for my password, so they couldn't do anything about it. I see this as no different than someone walking up to me on the street and trying to rob me of my credit card. If they don't get it the crime didn't happen?

They may not know the origin of the e-mail but I think they have a responsibility to at least attempt to find out. If they don't have the resources for that then they should have someone else do it for them. I'm disappointed in their response to you.

I am sure Paypal is doing all they can do be sure it doesn't happen, as far as THEY being responsible, they are not and will only do it to ensure a good name for themselves.
Laws are what protect you and I from scam and if those laws are broken, it is up to Law Enforcement and not us. (sometimes)
In paypals issue there is copyright infringements when their logos are being used. If they can find out who, they can sue. I doubt they will find out who and som eof these operations are being run by Laptops and are very mobile and in other countries where OUR laws have zero affect.

You're absolutely correct Wingwiper. By "Responsibility" I mean PayPal has the responsibility to ensure that the right people (Enforcement) look into this and attempt to track down the origin of the e-mail to MIFarmin, not just say they don't know the origin of the e-mail and can't do anything about it; which is what MIFarmin said his response was.

If you get a notice from PayPal and it says "Dear PayPal user or customer" it is a scam. If it comes directly from PayPal they will say customer number .......,etc.
The notices sure look authentic don't they. I won't use PayPal any longer since they don't seem trust worthy in helping you out.
If you use any of that stuff and purchase with a credit card, get a card that has a $500.00 limit so they can't get you for say $10,000.00. Most credit card companies are understanding but it takes a while to get the charges revoked.

I know what youmeant, I was running my mouth and giving an opinion. Without an IP address it is hard to say who is who and maybe they can go by the email addy but that doesn't always pan out any info either. I have 8 email accounts and I can change hosts at a drop of a hat and if I lived in Nigeria, you can't touch me.

I use a Debit card on an account I control the balance of. It is ALWAYS in a consumer's best interest to keep their Open To Buys low on Credit cards, for that Open to Buy is considered DEBT and can prevent you from getting a loan. Even if your balance is ZERO they look at your Open To Buy because very simply after you are approved for that Auto Loan you could go out and max your Credit cards and not be able to pay anyone back. Keep your OTBs as low as you can, you will have better chances getting loans approved and Credit people HAVE TO comply with your rquests, this also goes towards Dept Store accounts such as Best Buy, Circuit City etc, every Open To Buy held against your name is potential Debt and is condiered in loan giving.

That is a very good tip that I did not know. Thank you wingwiper. Off to cancel some credit cards. I have allot at zero balance and never new I could hurt me.
