 Valve handle for this

My hot water heater came with this valve and no handle. Looks like it could be turned with a screw driver, but rather have a handle so I don't mess it up when I flush the system.

So do they make a handle for this type of valve or is it there to discourage DIY from tinkering with it.

From experience these hot water valves can drip after flushing, hence the hose cap on the end to be sued if that happens Smile

 Valve handle for this

Dennis,

I'm surprised to see a brass valve. Most of them are plastic these days.

Gate valves tend to become inoperable after only a few years time. I much prefer a ball valve in this location.

If it's not too terribly inconvenient, you might want to remove that valve and install a brass ball valve equipped with a garden hose connection.

I've never seen a handle available for a valve stem like that one.

Joel

I would not be surprised to learn there is a special handle for these valves. I suspect they do not put handle on for safety to prevent a child or such from opening it.

Dennis, as others mentioned, this a 'tamper proof' valve, not the standard. It looks like someone's idea for draining it, it's backwards, the drain is normally a male garden hose spigot, not a female.

If you're handy swapping it out is child's play. As mentioned, a ball valve is a better choice.

If you have a small air compressor I can show you how to rig up a nifty little setup to clear all the sediment out of the heater.

Best of luck.

Murf,

It is a male spigot, in anticipation of the valve leaking at the first flush I bought a brass cap to screw on until I replaced the valve. In anticipation of my forgetting where I put the end cap I screwed it loosely onto the male spigot end which makes it look weird in the pix Smile
