Yup, they work VERY well, I have one at my cottage and one in home in The Bahamas, they are both propane fired with electronic ignition (no pilot light).

They will heat water as fast as it flows through for as long as you have propane left to burn.

Best of luck.

What make and models do you have, Murph? I'm seriously considering these on the "next" house.

Thanks for the reply but the unit I'm interested in is the SEISCO built by Microtherm Inc. which is electric.

They are both Bosch units. I have never had a moment of problems from either one, I also used to have a very small one in my boat.

Unless the existing water heater is less than 10 years old I would advise ANYONE to serious consider replacing their standard water heater with a tankless model, the energy savings are considerable.

In my house in the Bahamas it is also the only source of heat. It feeds an air handler that has a small coil in it and provides heat for those few times it's needed.

Best of luck.

The theory is the same regardless of what energy source you use.

I would advise you to keep all the options open though, look at gas, proane or oil models also, especially if you already have one (or more) of these fuels in use there.

Best of luck.

lbrown59: When using electric tankless heaters, look at BTU vs gas and the unit rate of rise. If the water enters too cold it may leave cold. We had to series 2 units to get the water hot enough. Well water tends to run a little bit colder.

 Tankless Water Heaters

I've got a Takagi here in Eugene, Oregon and LOVE IT!! I did alot of research before choosing the Takagi. I think the Bosch are solid units too, but my Takagi has 175,000 BTUs, which I'm not sure the Bosch could get to, and it's got the direct venting - powered vent to the outside and fresh air supply from the outside. The unit's in the attic above the bedroom and I don't hear more than a soft woosh when it fires up. I've got a control panel mounted on the wall so I can adjust the temperature to whatever I want. It is true that the efficiency and throughput will be somewhat effected by the temperature of the incoming water, but that hasn't been an issue for us and we're on a well. We have run the shower and dish washer at the same time with no problem.
The takagi web site is below. It suffers from the typical grammatical problems of translation between asian corporation and english language web site but it may provide some useful information.

The only other issue to address, is whether you have hard water or not. Hard water will almost certainly shorten the life with scaling in the heating chamber.

I'd recommend tankless to anybody.

 Tankless Water Heaters

Av8
Ive had a stainless electric model in my home in Ladysmith Wi. Water dont get much colder then there.
It is a S.E.T.S. whole house model. I have it set for 104 degrees that is as hot as I can stand and my wife who likes it hot, say's its OK Laughing out loud. Anyway I dont know about a large house though with only one. I can say I have had no problems with it and I love the instant hot water. It takes about a minute to cycle and then it stays at that temp until you turn it off. We only use the HOT when taking a shower that is why I have it set at that temp. If I turn it up, WOW you will scald your self!
